I experienced very unpleasant adverse effects with Tri-Luma. It caused huge zits on my face. They were much worse than the hyperpigmentation I was trying to fight with. I still have inflammational scars on my face. Also my skin complexion became uneven
I used Tri luma for 3 months once a day. I have to tell it is the worst skin bleaching product I’ve ever used. At first it was useful but after 1.5 -2 month of using it my hyperpigmentation spots became even darker that they were before it. It did not improve my hyperpigmentation at all but this isn’t the biggest problem.
My skin is in terrible, terrible condition now. My face looks like patchwork quilt. The places where skin was normally pigmented became lighter, my hyperpigmentation increased and the entire face is red and irritated. I need a professional dermatologist now and I even don’t know whether he can improve it.
I know Tri luma helps some people but you should consider well about it. It contains hydroquinone, this component was banned at many countries because of it potential side effects.
Last years I started to develop dark circles around my eyes and mouth. I tried different creams but nothing worked for me. When I started to use Tri Luma my dark circles began to fade on the second week of using. It was miracle for me because I already considered an expensive laser treatment at that time. I can hardly afford it so I was very happy to find Tri Luma.
I used tri luma around my eyes for several months. It really disfigured my skin. Dark circles became darker while the skin around was lightened too much. I look like damned freaky panda and can nothing to do.
I have dark pigmentations on my nose, cheeks, and forehead. I am now on Triluma. I am using it for three weeks, I have not noticed any irritation yet and no result for that time. I am so embarrassed by this spots so I hope it will help me.
I’m a 41 year old man with light brown skin. A dermatologist prescribed me Triluma because of melasma spots. I used it for 2 months. It caused peeling and stinging sensation after applying. After 2 months I did not noticed any lightening, it actually made worse my hyperpigmentation. I used it nightly and always applied a sun block. It didn’t work for me and damaged my skin.
I tried Triluma for just a week and had severe burning! I sweared I will never use it again like everything else with hydroquinone.
I am 30; I have red hair and very fair dry skin with freckles. Also I got chloasma spots during pregnancy last year. I am living at California so my skin is exposed to sun year around. After using Triluma, my freckles and spots faded and are almost invisible now. I used Triluma for one month. It is effective but rather irritative for my skin. It cased dryness and redness during usage; I need to apply good moisturizer after it.
I have melasma on my upper lip. It was caused by electrolysis. My past problem with lip was unwanted hair and I turned it to another problem – melasma. I was prescribed Tri luma and it burned my poor lip. It seems I already need the new one. I want to kill my dermatologist.
I have using Triluma for last 4 months as I have melasma on my upper lips, chins, and forehead. I observed it helped some in the beginning. Last week, I stopped using the cream and on the very second day, I saw blemishes all over my face more darker and worse then before. I have been using sunblock 60+ every day. I am very disappointed with this cream. I have to see my dermatologist again next week. What a waste of time and money. My skin is red, rough and uneven at the moment. Its scares me bit. They need to do some more research and tests I guess.
I live in Jamaica and i am exposed to the sun daily.I have a really bad case of melasma on my cheeks, forehead and upper lip.I started to use Triluma about 4 weeks now and i am really pleased with how much my spots have faded.I experienced no burning or peeling of my skin. For me so far so good.
does anyone have any left over triluma to give me, its expensive and i need it bad, thank you,
can some one that use tri-luma tell me what sunbloquer was the best or the dermatologist recomend plz
I got very bad melasma in my sheeks, i am doing laser treatment for almost two years and seven weeks ago i started using Triluma. What a miracle! my dark skin started getting lighter and now my melasma is gone in about 90%. The cream and my doctor are the best things happened in my life. My life is happy again.
My Dr. Prescribed tri-luma due to my aging spots of my face. This dark spots on my face and i have a dark spot on my upper lips due to waxing it been theres for many years never fade away so Dr, prescribed to me the tri- luma he gave a small sample to me, I cannot afford the ” real thing”
I Tell you , IT WORKS LIKE A MIRACLE TO ME. I use on my darks pots and i use verly little on the whole face. and after I use my night cream, I look 10 years younger all the people notice, not only my darks spots fading and it tooks 10 years younger on my face. yes It has a tingling sensation, but only few minutes. when I wake up I put sun block my dr, recommend sunlock 55 on my face, this is the best cream I Ever had, It a miracle cream, I higly recomended.
I feel compelled to defend Triluma, as it is the only skin lightener that has worked on my melasma.
My melasma was inherited (thank you family genes) and compounded by going on the birth control pill. It has gotten worse with age and after trying every skin lightener available, in every price range, I was prescribed Triluma. I was very discouraged by the cost (and it has gone up since I fist used it), however figured I had spent more than that on all the previous products, so I gave it a try. Here is what I’ve learned:
First of all, my excellent dermatologist advised me to apply A THIN LAYER every other day for the first week(this is definitely key to achieving a positive result and avoiding the redness and pealing others have experienced with this product). It should be applied a half hour before going to bed on cleansed skin (I use Fresh brand Soy Cleanser and highly recommend it, as well).
After a week, I applied a THIN LAYER every night on cleansed skin a half hour before going to sleep. When I notice pealing (which is inevitable, as this is a PERSCRIPTION STRENGTH MEDICATION), I exfoliate with Fresh product Sugar Face Polish (this product is AMAZING and very natural. It leaves my skin incredibly soft without any irritation.)
I stop using the product when I achieve my desired result and resume in the same manner when I start seeing spots again. I always see results after the first week of use. I ALWAYS get comments on how great my skin looks after the first week. My friends even say, “are you using that cream again?” (They also ask what it is I’m using and recommend it to their friends.) Although it isn’t for fine lines, I do feel like they improve, as well (although it might just be how much I love how my skin looks after using Triluma).
Above all, it should be noted that this is a PERSCRIPTION STRENGTH MEDICATION and should be viewed as such. When you obey the product instructions and the advice of your dermatologist, you will see results unparalleled. You can not expect to experience positive results if you do not obey them and apply the product as you would an over the counter product. This is why it is a PERSCRIPTION. YOU WILL DAMAGE YOUR SKIN IF YOU IGNOR THE INSTRUCTIONS SINCE IT IS A PERSCRIPTION STRENGTH CHEMICAL YOU ARE APPLYING.
Bottom line: If you have moderate to severe Melasma and are frustrated with the lack of results from OTC skin creams, AND you are responsible about taking perscription medication, you WILL SEE RESULTS NEARLY IMMEDIATELY from applying Triluma.
PS Triluma did not pay me to endorse their product, although if they offered I would TOTALLY accept.
forgot to give this product its 5 star rating.
I have been using Triluma for 8 weeks to treat melasma or brown spots on my face caused by sun damage. I started noticing remarkable positive results after only 1 week. My spots gradually got lighter and lighter to almost dissapearing completely. The first 2-3 days on this cream my skin got very sensitive and a little dry and itchy but I read it was part of the process. In the morning after I washed my face, I put moisturizer and my sun block. I noticed when I put moisturizer and sun protection, my skin felt like burning and got a little red but then it would go back to normal. My skin looked yourger, and glowing. After 7 weeks of using this cream I was happy the way my skin looked so I stopped using it. Unfortunately, after only 2 days of not using it, my dark spots resurfaced even though I avoided the sun, and continued using sunblock 90+ SPF. This made me very upset. I am dissapointed with this cream. I started using it again because I have no other option. I still have 1/2 tube left so I might as well finish it but I am looking for a different cream to use that has better lasting results.
I would not recommend this cream. I have a lot of discoloration on my face and my dermatologist had prescribed this cream. After 1 week of using this cream, I had to stop. I couldn’t stand the burning and rawness I was getting. My face looks worse and my face is more uneven. I have been off the cream for 3 days now and I am still feeling the burn. DO NOT USE THIS CREAM.
I used tri luma for a month now, and I’m very happy with results. My dermatologist prescribes the cream to me, I took it to the pharmacy and the insurance covered it for me. Also in the triluma web site there is a $40.00 dollar capon available for the co-payment so the cream was actually free. I used in conjunction with vitamin c, dermatique and a cream for dry skin to prevent irritation. Every now and then I had very mild side effect like a little burning sensation but my skin did not peel or got damaged. I love the cream use it as prescribed and you will achieve great results. Very important I used a 60 sunscreen protector.
Like one of the other ladies said, if you are going to be using a PRESCRIPTION strength CHEMICAL oyu HAVE to follow instructions. And you have to HAVE TO have a proper skincare regime (cleanser, toner, moisturiser, spf, mask, exfoliater-non-granular). Otherwise your skin won’t be able to tolerate those chemicals! And if your skin care regime contains harsh ingredients such as soap, alcohol, colourants, fragrances, etc. This will contribute to your sensitivity towards this product!
I AM VERY DISAPOINTED WITH THIS PRODUCT(TRILUMA). THERE WAS NO IRRITATION BUT IT DIDN’T WORK FOR ME. I USED IT FOR A FEW MONTHS AND THERE WAS NO CHANGE EXCEPT A BIG COST OF THIS PRODUCT. MAYBE IT WORKS FOR OTHERS. GOOD LUCK.
I wished I had checked this website before I trying Tri-Luma. I had recently used a sample provided by a dermatologist who did not say anything about testing it first on small spot – his staff only said to use it once a day at night and that’s exactly what I did. After the 3rd night, I felt an extreme burning sensation, I asked his office again what I should do. They said to use it now once every 2 days and I used it another 2 times before realizing that it had permanently burned my face and caused much worse pigmentation than before and with lots of wrinkles too!!. Even my neighbor noticed my face looked much worse than before and the last time I saw her was only a week before using Tri-luma! Really, I think the product manufacturer of Tri-luma and the doctor should warn their patients of the negative effects (which seems to be very common, based on all the feedback sent to this website.)
I am so alarmed since my face was getting better with my staying home 80% of the time in the last few months and was getting much clearer before I decided to give my face one final “kick” to clearer skin before the holidays! That was a horrible mistake as I now looked 10 times worse and much older!
What a disappointment with Tri-luma product and my dermatologist who was very defensive when I told him about the adverse side effects on my skin. I now wonder how long it would take for my skin to get back to where before I used Tri-luma!! My conclusion based on my own experience – please be very careful using Tri-luma!!! Zero star rating from me!
Hi I am 15 years old and last november i had the chicken pox. I am african american and our skin tends to hyperpigmentate more. I used triluma last year but only on my face, arms, and chest. The area I applied triluma looks so much more different then the area i didnt. The spots that i use to have on my face, arms, and chest are completley gone. Now im starting to put it on my back and seeing a difference. I hope it continues to work on me!
Triluma works for me. Half black, half Chinese female. Have malasma on cheeks and forehead. Been using 4% hydroquonine for more than a year with minimal results. Tri luma has cleared all dark spots within 1 month. This is my medical miracle! Thought I was doomed to have poor skin forever. I’m suprised it was not prescribed sooner.
Sincerely,
Forever a Tri-luma fan!!
I’ve been using Tri-Luma for a few days, and I feel skin irratation and burning. The skin also appears to be thinning. I will try for another few days to see if these side affects disappear. I’m not sure about this product, the verdict is still out.
I tried Tri-Luma years ago. I have light skin, somewhat sensitive. I had a large spot on my left temple.(Dr. thought it was due to birth control). My doctor gave me 6 refills! It didn’t work fast, but it did work for me. Spot was almost entirely gone. Then I noticed it was only supposed to be used for 8 weeks! After about 4 years more spots have surfaced on both sides of my face. I tried a number of options, inclucing the (above) #1 rated product Meladerm cream. Unfortunately that cream did zero for me. I wish it had as Tri-Luma has ingredients I’d prefer not to put on my skin long term, but I plan to try it again as nothing else has worked. Occassionally my skin would break out or get somewhat dry. I’d just stop using it for a while, then start again. For me – it’s the only thing that had a good result. The other options had zero impact. We’re all different. Be cautious no matter what and good luck!
after readin the review.. my conclusion is not to use this freakin sample…. Bec. when my doctor started talking bout it i started to read her vibrations that there is something fishy goin on here and if i was dumb enough not to look this product up i could had been like playing russian roulette… This Tri-Luma is very medioker… and i think i would stick with the natural process, which is wait it heal…
My experience with TriLuma has been amazing. I inherited the Melasma from my mother, and after giving birth it just became theree times worse. My dermatologist recommended TriLuma and it has been the best thing ever. The spots on my forehead and cheeks were gone in just 2 weeks of using the cream. I started using every other day and then every night for 8 weeks. Highly recomend to anyone is struggling with Melasma.
Tri Luma worked on my skin. I agree with “Sarah”. you have to use a very thin layer. The redness and peeling goes away after 4 or 5 days. That’s normal reaction for my skin after using hydroquonine. Melasma does come back when you discontinue use, but my derm told me that. I use it during the summer with a good sunscreen and use it sparingly during the winter, also with a heavy moisturizing sunscreen. I love this product
With tri-luma my dark spot did disappear within 3 months but reappeared shortly after I stopped using the product.
I had positive results with Tri-Luma!!!It worked amazingly for me!!! I had dark spots on my upper lip that made me look as if I had a mustache. I was so embarrased I had to be putting makeup and still wouldn’t help. So the dermatologist prescribed it to me & I used it faithfully every night applying a thin layer with a Q-tip. I also applied sunscreen in the morning & before working out and stop taking birth control pills. The spots went away completely after 3 months of using it faithfully every night.
I have melasma on my forehead and cheeks. This is the third time I have used Tri-Luma. When I started using this medicine my skin turned really sensitive and irritated. Even with my face really burnt I did not stop the Tri Luma and the side effects went away after one week. In my personal experience I have seen huge improvements within two weeks. Then I have stopped using the medication after 8 weeks according the Dermatologist instructions. After 8 weeks my skin looked really wonderful and younger. No dark spots, 100 % melasma free and the tone completely even.
By the week 10(or 2 weeks after I stopped using it) the melasma came back as dark as it used to be. The happiness does not last longer. I just finished the third treatment two days ago. This is the last time I will try this medicine. if melasma comes back again I will try to find a new medication with permanent results. I wished the result were permanent or last longer , I am not a doctor but sometimes medications might cure the outside but not the inside. That’s why it returns.
By the way this medication is pretty expensive if your insurance does not cover the price. Over $100 per/ tube. For me, one tube was enough for two treatments of 8 weeks each one or 16 weeks total.
I used this cream for two days and my skin is peeling and I started having pimples that I have had before, my face is starting to get really red around my cheeks. I was hoping this production was going to work but I lost my hope and lost 125 dollar which I could had spent it on my baby brothers.
I have always had somewhat blotchy skin and i have used other skin lightnening products in the past, such as pro-active (they have a skin bleaching product) but they never did work. i started using tri-luma in November of 2009 and its February 2010 and i must say i love it and im very satisfied with it. i am a 22 year old african-american female with very sensative skin and it works wonderfully for me.
I might be consiered the Melasma Queen by some.
Background: Registered Nurse who has worked for a plastic surgeon and his wife a dermatologist for 13 years. I’m 41 years old and has had melasma for 9 years.
Products I’ve tried (for free I might add):
Fraxel laser: Made it worse
Laser Peels: Made it worse
Meladerm: Nothing
Dermaquest Skin Vitalight: Nothing
Broadbrand light laser treatments: Nothing, some scarring
Obagi Blue Peels: Nothing
Cosmelan: Long history with Cosmelan, worked great once! Melasma gone almost instantly. Then… then they had to change their product due to FDA regulations. Tried 3 more times after changes and had worthless experiences after peeling, redness and burning. Not to mention applying a pasty brown substance on my face two to three times a day.
VI Peels: 4 in total, these peels are fantastic. Excellent for fine lines and brown spots very proximal or close to the skin. For the melasmic skin.. again, not much chance. Here, in the midwest I would have paid close to $1200 for those peels. Honestly, for the melasma results seen, I would not have paid $12.00
The bottom line. I have all the best, most expensive treatments available to me, cost free. I have not paid for one treatment. Sadly, none have shown me any great results. I have before picture taken prio to any treatments and unfortunately, after all the peeling, burning, stinging and social isolation, nothing has changed. I am currently using TriLuma against my better judgement. My skin in now, dry, pasty with a few cystic eruptions and very unnatractive. I think personally that we all must work with whatever gives us results as melasma is a chronic, difficult and extemely expensive condition to deal with. Wish I could have offered some advice but hear to tell you… save your hard earned money and wear sunscreen because I’ve been the girl in your derms office and the medspa offering you finance options and financing on expensive treatments when I knew you would end up in the same boat as me.
I have suffered from acne since I was 11 years old. Because of the fact that I am african american, It always left me with horrible scars on my face. I was beyond self conscious. Summers where worse, the scars would darken. I descovered tri luma about 7 years ago. It changed my life. Triluma is worth a try if you suffer the same. My skin is so bright flawless and I can go with out makeup. The trick for me is to use once daily and once things are under control perhaps every other day apply the cream. There is a point where the cream may seem like it does not work I may take a break from the cream for a month or two and then restart. I use a mild soap and try to stay out of the sun as much as possible. It works very quickly as well. Its worth a try. I give it 5 stars!!!
I use Triluma for 2 months and the age spot had almost
disappeared. But after days I stopped using it, the age spot come back again. Is anyone have a better solution for it? Anyone try meladerm before? Did it works?
Hi
I have been fighting dark spots for a while now I have tried every cream including obagi nothing has worked. I went to the Dermatologist office and they recomended a peel I went ahead and did the peel well..it burned my skin and now I have darker spots in areas I didnt have. I went again and they sent me the Tri-luma cream. I dont know what to do. I am confused now more than ever I hear such bad stories but then I hear others that have such great results. What should I do?????
Marlene
I agree with sarah 100 percent i had dark spots all over my face and i noticed a change with in two weeks i did the mistake once of putting on extra cream on my skin turned red and started to peel the next day i stopped using it until the rednees went away and i started to use it again but but this time i followed the directions to a t, and guess what i have not had any problems my god i love this cream to all the people who complain about it “did you follow the directions or did you do what i did? did you think putting more cream would hurry the process? lol nope sorry that is why there is directions on how to use the cream. and sarah you are sooooooooooooooo right this cream is a god send to me
Followed the directions. I have olive skin coloring and this cream made my spots darker. I spf 30 & wear hats when its sunny. Too afraid to try anything else
I have had good short-term results with Tri-Luma. I’m worried about long-term effects. My prescriber said to apply a very thin layer on the affected areas at night before bed (after washing), for ONLY 2 weeks at a time, then 2 weeks off, 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off… then we’d re-evaluate.
I have great results from just 2 weeks of use. My face looks brighter, younger, healthier. I’ve only had a little drying and irritation. But by the end of the 2 weeks off, the melasma is back. I use it very sparingly and try to give my skin a break.
I’ve also used Cosmelan, both the old and new. I had amazing results from the old version of Cosmelan that lasted almost a year. That was 2 years ago. When the melasma eventually came back, I tried to find Cosmelan again, but the new version is worthless. It’s so disappointing.
I’ve been using the tri-luma off and on for 4 months. I know it’s not a cure. I’m worried about long term side-effects, and have read everything on the risks and complications. I don’t think I’ll develop ochronosis. My main concern is if this makes melasma a whole lot worse when eventually I’ll have to stop. Then what?
I work outside but wear 85spf sunscreen and a hat as much as possible. I just wish I had different skin.
i do not like triluma pls do not use i look like a monkey after applying it with red chickes and browm forehead.
My doc recommended I use tri-luma only on my dark spots. He said apply nightly for 12 weeks. I had no side effects, in fact NOTHING happened…no decrease in color either. I paid $175…..wish I had read web site.
It works initially when you apply it every day. But if you stop using it for 1-2 days, the dark spots come back immediately and even darker!!! Tri-Luma contains hydroquinone which is carcinogenesis, and you cannot used it forever. Don’t be fooled by its effect when you use it first time. Stop using it if you don’t want your malasma worse.
Went to see the dermatologist and he prescribed tri-luma for the hyperpigmentation on my face. Have tried almost everything, Cosmelan, Meladerm, Skinceuticals, Kiehls, etc. etc. to combat the melasma and achieved temporary success with only the Cosmelan, but that was before they changed the product. Am very nervous about trying tri-luma after reading the reviews here….
I have been using Tri-Luma to cover patches on my forehead, and upper lip for the past month! Cant tell if its working yet but I do recomend not waxing and using this product at the same time! Waxed my upper lip last night and burnt the crud out of it. My lip is still red and numb. I will no longer use Tri-luma on my upper lip but will continue using it everywhere else! Again, D0 NOT WAX WHILE USING THIS PRODUCT! I hope i didnt do more damage to myself!
My derm prescribed Tri-Luma for Melasma on my cheekbones and jawline. She said to use it all over my face, however, in place of Retin-a. Thank goodness I took the conservative approach and only used it on the spots. After a couple weeks, the color intensified and I dc’d the product and returned to using Retin-A on those areas as before. The spots have returned to their “normal” color and I will never use Triluma again. I would rate it 0 stars. It is expensive and has unpredictable results. However the accompanying patient leaflet DOES disclose the rather low % of good outcomes as well as the temporary nature of any lightening effect.
I think a lot of these ratings are unfair. Yeah, my skin peeled and was tingly for a while, but beyond that it cleared up so much in the first week that people who hadn’t seen me in week were stunned at the improvement in tone. You have to cut off the cause of the melasma at the source (if possible.) I went off the pill that caused the melasma and used 100+ spf rain or shine. I also stopped the treatment quickly and took a day off when my face felt too tender. All in all, this did more than I expected (it did what I wished for) and it was about the same price as a facial at an upscale spa. Love it.
I was prescribed Tri-Luma for dark spots that were left by Lupus rashes after they healed. Tri-Luma made my skin very irritated and caused it to peel and become raw. Once the raw and peeling spots healed, I had darker spots than before using Tri-Luma. I only used this expensive nonsense cream for a week. I wish I could give it 0 stars and get my money back.
